Mixed month for Houston area construction projects started in September
New nonresidential construction projects in the Houston gained momentum in September, but not enough to outweigh a drop on the residential side, according to a new Dodge Data & Analytics report.
The value of nonresidential construction projects started in the Houston area rose by 15 percent year over year in September, while residential starts fell by 12 percent during the period, according to the report.

Overall, the value of new Houston-area construction projects dipped 3 percent year-over-year to $1.36 billion in September, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Nonresidential projects made up $556 million of the total, while residential projects comprised $800 million.

So far this year through September, total building starts are down 22 percent from prior-year levels to $13.4 billion. There were $17.1 billion worth of building starts in the first nine months of 2018.
Nonresidential projects include office, retail, hotels, warehouses, manufacturing, schools, health care, religious and other buildings. Residential projects include homes and apartments.
Dodge Data & Analytics tracks construction starts in a region covering Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto and Waller counties.
